Incumbents on Coast face tough challenge in Tuesday’s vote

A powerful legislator with a tough challenger is Senate Finance Committee Chairman Tommy Robertson, R-Moss Point. He is battling for his seat against Republican Michael Watson. Robertson, a 51-year-old attorney, has been in the Senate since 1992. The winner will face Democrat Ray Vecchio on Nov. 6.

Last-minute television ads paid for by a national anti-tobacco group have urged Robertson’s constituents to boot him because of his opposition to a grocery tax cut. At Gov. Haley Barbour’s request, Robertson killed a bill earlier this year that would have raised cigarette taxes while lowering grocery taxes. He said the economy was too unstable to consider other forms of grocery tax cuts.
