Senate panel to debate Southwick appointment today

Leslie Southwick faces a showdown today when a Senate panel decides whether the retired Mississippi Court of Appeals judge gets a lifetime appointment on the federal bench.

A series of civil rights and human rights groups oppose Southwick’s confirmation. They say his support of some Mississippi Court of Appeals rulings makes him unfit for a seat on the New Orleans-based 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
