TR TV: Eighth Inning Rally Cut Short Due to Controversial Call at First

s LSU tried to mount one of its patented late-inning comebacks, a botched call at first took the wind out of their sails in the eighth inning against North Carolina on Sunday evening.
With LSU trailing 8-2, left fielder Jared Mitchell cracked a single just inside the third-base line. LSU slugger Blake Dean then hit a single into right field to load the bases.
Micah Gibbs was walked to force in a run and Matt Clark then went down swinging for the first out.
D.J. LeMahieu punched a ground ball to UNC third baseman Chad Flack. With Dean bearing down on him, Flack hesitated but uncorked an on-target throw to first baseman Dustin Ackley. LeMahieu was called safe and replay showed that the freshman either beat the throw or arrived at the same time as the throw and as the rule goes — tie goes to the runner.
Mitchell would score on that play and cut the deficit to 8-4 with Leon Landry at the plate and Ryan Schimpf on deck as the potential tying run.
