These ‘D’ coaches ready for the next step

Thirty-two percent of the hires after the 2006 season were “defensive” coaches, but that number dropped to just 11 percent after 2007. The percentage jumped dramatically, to 41, after the 2008 season, then slipped back to 29 percent after last season.

Iowa State’s Paul Rhoads, who recently engineered one of the biggest upsets of the season by leading his Cyclones to victory at Texas, is one of the nation’s hottest coaches. Rhoads’ background? It’s on the defensive side of the ball, as he was a defensive coordinator at Pittsburgh and Auburn before landing the Iowa State job.
