Russell ready to take shot at starting job

Russell ready to take shot at starting job

As Mississippi State opens spring practice on Tuesday, the battle for the quarterback job will obviously be closely monitored by everyone.

Junior Chris Relf has the advantage of having played some last season and was most effective as a runner, a role that will no doubt have to expand if he’s the every-down starter.

The guy with the most upside, though, is redshirt freshman Tyler Russell, who’s been hailed as the Bulldogs’ quarterback of the future ever since he signed last year.

One of the best decisions Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen made last season was holding off on playing Russell and not throwing him to the wolves. He wasn’t ready, and the worst thing you can do to a young quarterback when he’s not ready is to throw him out there, especially in the SEC.
