As NCAA Tournament has gotten bigger, it got better
IN THE MIDST of my 22nd year in this business, I can say that I’m no longer much of a purist about most things in sports.
I’ve accepted change as inevitable.
That’s why I can’t get all worked up over the fact that there again is serious debate about expanding the men’s NCAA Tournament from 65 to 96 teams.
I couldn’t care less, one way or the other.
If I were in charge, I’d leave the field as it is.
I think an uneven number is silly for the start of an elimination tournament, but since organizers never will eliminate one at-large bid for the sake of letting another “minnow conference” champion in, I’m fine with the play-in game.
