Favre, Vikings poised for Super Bowl run after dismantling Cowboys
It would be difficult for the Vikings to head into the NFC championship game with more momentum. They dismantled the Cowboys, 34-3, on Sunday, and it was a sparkling performance by Favre (four touchdown passes), wide receiver Sidney Rice (three touchdown catches) and the Vikings’ defense. The Cowboys never reached the end zone, and Tony Romo will be reaching for ice packs after being sacked six times and pounded constantly.
Winning at New Orleans next week will not be easy for the Vikings, but we should stop wondering if Favre’s 40-year-old body can hold up for a Super Bowl run.
“I feel like I’m playing the same way and have the same enthusiasm,” Favre said after becoming the first 40-year-old quarterback to win a playoff game. “I feel pretty good. Probably the most fatigued or tired I got today was celebrating. I’ve been hit a few times, but our guys have played outstanding up front.
“I think I can withstand whatever. But c’mon, at 40 years old, you take a pounding, playing all the games I’ve played in a row, something’s got to give. These guys we played today, I was really concerned. You ask the last four or five quarterbacks who played against this team — they would tell me [to] be concerned. It was an outstanding job by our guys.”
If Favre does not get back to the Super Bowl, lack of a supporting cast will not be the reason. The Vikings have stars on both sides of the ball, and they put on a show that emphatically ended the Cowboys’ season. Dallas linebacker Keith Brooking was after Favre threw a touchdown pass to Visanthe Shiancoe with 1:55 left. Brooking felt the Vikings were rubbing it in. And maybe they were.
“I heard all that nonsense and all the hype about Dallas Cowboys coming to town,” Vikings coach Brad Childress said. “I knew (the Vikings) would play their tail off and dispel that myth.”
