Item: Tiger Woods beats Rocco Mediate to win the U.S. Open.
I think: There is no questioning Tiger’s talent. However, he has questionable behavior on the course. On Sunday, after what he perceived to be a lousy second shot on 18, he slammed his club. It’s not his first outburst on a course. While I don’t believe children should be encouraged to use athletes as role models, there is no doubt that Tiger Woods serves as a role model for many children. Somebody — a friend, his coach, his wife, a Nike rep — needs to tell Tiger to control his temper and be as outstanding a role model as he is a golfer.
Item: The Los Angeles Lakers force a sixth game in the NBA Finals.
I think: Before this series with the Boston Celtics began, I thought the Lakers would win in six games. Now, I just don’t see a way they can win twice in Boston. So, Kevin Garnett finally will get his championship ring and remove his name from the list of great players who never won a title. It’s just too bad for Timberwolves fans he never had enough help to lift the Wolves to a championship.
Item: The Twins are 4 1/2 games out of first place in the American League Central.
I think: The Chicago White Sox aren’t exactly running away with the division. And with a six-game homestand, now would be the time for the Twins to put a dent in the White Sox’s lead. After three games at home against Pittsburgh, the White Sox play
