RELEASE:

High Bid Received in Northeast MS Cemetery up for Public Auction

Jackson, Miss.—A bid of over $100,000 was received to purchase a Northeast Mississippi cemetery up for public auction. Mr. Thomas Fowlkes of Oxford, Miss. submitted the highest bid with a cash purchase offer of $128,750 for Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Corinth.

“We are one step closer to completing the long, complicated sale of this cemetery,” says Secretary Hosemann. “The families of the individuals buried at Forrest Memorial Park deserve to know their loved ones will be cared for in perpetuity. This will hopefully bring closure to the families involved.”

Mr. Fowlkes’ bid must be approved by the Chancery Court before a sale of the cemetery may be complete.

As you may remember, a 2011 investigation by the Secretary of State’s Office found Forrest Memorial Park Cemetery preneed trust accounts were depleted by approximately $473,521 by former owner Wayne Hight.
