Ex-allied Espy, Luckett both running for Clarksdale mayor

In the heart of the Mississippi Delta, in a city rattled as much by crime as by decay, two former political allies will vie for an open mayor’s seat in a race already grabbing local attention.

Past Democratic gubernatorial candidate and prominent Clarksdale businessman Bill Luckett will run for office in 2013 against one of his most ardent statewide campaign supporters, state Rep. Chuck Espy, D-Clarksdale. Espy had played what he called a major role in Luckett’s ultimately failed bid for governor and was stunned to learn he’d soon be facing him at the ballot box.
