Miss. congressman Thompson to visit U.S.-Mexico border
JACKSON, Miss. — U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson says he will accompany Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano on a visit to the Southwest border region.
Thompson, D-Miss., who is chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, says Wednesday’s visit will include a tour of border patrol operations and a stop at the Otay Mesa port of entry across the border from Tijuana.
Thompson said in a statement that the escalating violence in the U.S.-Mexico border region is a serious security threat. He says the visit will provide an opportunity to see firsthand how the new Southwest Border Security Initiative will be implemented.
