Childers at odds with GOP leaders over SCHIP

By: Magnolia Tribune - January 27, 2009

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, 1/27/9

U.S. Rep. Travis Childers took the case for the State Children’s Health Insurance Program to the doctor’s office Monday, while Gov. Haley Barbour and the state’s two Republican U.S. senators voiced their opposition to expanding the program.

“Covering more eligible children is not only the right thing to do,” said Childers, D-Booneville, as he stood in front of North Mississippi Pediatrics in Tupelo, “it makes good economic sense for taxpayers who will not foot the bill for more costly problems down the road.”

Childers was part of a bipartisan majority that passed the SCHIP bill in the U.S. House earlier this month.

The reauthorization keeps the program in place, which provides health insurance coverage for children whose parents make too much money to qualify for Medicaid, but can’t afford health insurance.

The Senate likely will vote on the bill later this week.
