Around 11 a.m. Tuesday, the halls of the Mississippi Capitol were unusually quiet considering the Legislature was in session.

Normally at that time of day, the halls are bustling with lobbyists, legislators and others on state government business. On Tuesday, though, they weren’t.

But a little after the top of the hour, a roar came from a fourth-floor committee room, where senators, staff and some lobbyists stood in front of a television and applauded at the conclusion of Barack Obama’s swearing-in

It was a similar sight on the House floor. Televisions was set up, and the pages, who are high school and junior high students, were ushered in to watch the historic event. But House members, including Speaker Billy McCoy, D-Rienzi, and staff also filtered in to watch the proceedings.

“I am guaranteed three more years as a member of the House,” said Rep. Brian Aldridge, R-Tupelo. “That is all I am guaranteed so I want to do as much as I can at the state Capitol.
