Father: Alleged slaying witness was in custody

By: Magnolia Tribune - May 16, 2008

The Clarion-Ledger, 5/15/8

The father of one of the men named as a witness to the Nov. 14, 1995, shooting death of Jackson police officer Robert Washington says his son was in juvenile detention at the time.

In a sworn statement given in March to prosecutors and detectives investigating Washington’s death, Stephan Hickman says he witnessed Sharrod Ray Moore grab Washington’s gun and shoot him near a baseball field in west Jackson. Hickman says friends Shawn Burton and Larry Nelson Jr. also were at the scene.

“That whole scene. All that is pretty much fabricated,” said Larry Nelson Sr. “Larry was in the (youth) detention center. I picked him up in the detention center at Thanksgiving in 1995. There is no way he was there.”

Nelson’s son was shot dead last year. Police found the 27-year-old’s body in a vacant lot on Farish Street on July 4, 2007. No one has been charged in the slaying.
