Bryant, others optimistic about budget-year’s end
Gov. Phil Bryant and others are optimistic the state budget can limp through the fiscal year’s end June 30 without more red ink.
Bryant has been forced to make four rounds of emergency mid-year cuts totaling more than $170 million and to-date has pulled about $11 million from the rainy day fund to cover shortfalls in the fiscal 2017 budget.
Over the last two years, most state agencies have seen cuts of 10 percent or more as revenue failed to meet projections used to set their budgets.
But with May revenue numbers out, Bryant said he is optimistic that “when all funds are considered, proactive budget management could allow us to end the fiscal year without a deficit and still maintain a healthy rainy day fund.”
