DAILY JOURNAL – OUR OPINION: Carefully review Trump’s choice to lead education
President-elect Donald Trump’s choosing school-voucher advocate Betsy DeVos for secretary of education should be met with skepticism and perhaps outright opposition from advocates who have fought tooth and nail to gain and retain adequate funding for public schools.
DeVos, a billionaire and philanthropist by way of the Amway home products fortune, is a social activist who has pushed forcefully for school voucher programs nationwide for private schools, a move that would imperil adequate funding in states like Mississippi.
Trump’s pick underlines his promises to put “school choice” – the expansion of taxpayer-funded charter schools and vouchers for private and religious schools – at the center of his education initiatives.
