Gary Pettus: When obeying God, public servants are picky
This summer, a circuit clerk in Mississippi became one of the first public officials to recoil at the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that marriage equality is the law.
That decision, she said in her resignation letter, “violates my core values as a Christian … . (T)he Bible clearly teaches that homosexuality is contrary to God’s plan and purpose for marriage and family.”…
…Surely, almost any public employee with religious convictions similar to those feisty clerks’ must, in the performance of their sworn duties, eat those convictions daily….
…Clearly, if you’re a public official, you must choose your battles. Clearly, many have chosen just the one.
