Barbour to discuss time in office at Ole Miss Wednesday
OXFORD, Miss. – As he prepares to leave office, Gov. Haley Barbour will discuss his eight years of leadership in Mississippi with political columnist Charlie Mitchell next week at the Overby Center for Southern Journalism and Politics at the University of Mississippi.
The program, “A Conversation with Haley Barbour,” is set for 6 p.m. Wednesday (Oct. 12) in the Overby Center Auditorium. Free and open to the public, the event will be followed by a reception.
Barbour, who is completing his second term, has led the state through the disaster of Hurricane Katrina as well as the triumph of attracting a new Toyota plant to north Mississippi since he took office in 2004. He will be asked to review his – and the state’s – highs and lows during the hourlong program.
Barbour will respond to questions from Mitchell, assistant dean of the UM Meek School of Journalism and New Media. A former editor of the Vicksburg Post, he still writes a syndicated weekly column that appears in many Mississippi newspapers.
“We’re looking forward to a spirited discussion,” Overby fellow Curtis Wilkie said. “Haley Barbour is an entertaining figure and a skillful political leader, and Charlie Mitchell is a veteran newspaperman who knows this state as well as anyone. They’ll be able to take their talk in any direction they want to go.”
Barbour last appeared at the Overby Center in 2010, when he publicly responded to questions from a panel of Mississippi reporters in a program called “Facing the Press.”
