Choctaws postpone vote on possible Jones Co. casino
LAUREL — The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians’ Tribal Council postponed Wednesday’s vote on whether to build a casino on the Bogue Homa Reservation in Jones County.
“The vote was postponed so the Tribal Council members can consider financing options for the casino,” explained tribe spokesman Warren Strain, communication director for the Pearl River Resort. “The meeting for a future vote has not been scheduled.”
The tribe is considering building a 27,000-square-foot casino in the Bogue Homa community near Sandersville. The casino is expected to be equipped with 500 to 700 slot machines. It would be a $17 million investment, employing about 250 people.
The Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians opened Silver Star casino in 1994 and the Golden Moon in 2002. Both casinos are in Philadelphia. If a casino is constructed in Jones County, it will be the first casino built outside the tribal headquarters in Neshoba County.
