Day 2 Recap (Wednesday):
Wednesday was another excellent day on the Main Street Mississippi Tour. We kicked off the morning in Eupora and visited Mathiston and then traveled up the road to Calhoun City. Anne isn’t too happy about my eating three breakfasts per day, but it’s an effective way to meet voters and talk about the issues facing our country.
I met a pastor on our fourth stop in downtown Houston who was vigorously supporting us before we headed out for Aberdeen. While visiting there, we met a prideful group of retirees who walk downtown Aberdeen picking up trash to keep their town beautiful.
We spent two hours in Columbus yesterday. I was introduced to the Golden Triangle Realtors Association and then my staff and I fanned out through downtown campaigning and talking about job growth. I had the pleasure of telling WCBI, the Commercial Dispatch and the Packet about our Main Street Mississippi Tour.
In West Point, I sat in the park and admired the downtown before walking the streets. A pleasant break after a tiresome and busy day. Please visit the article written about our tour in the Daily Times Leader.
Our next stop was in Okolona. I spoke to a local pharmacist about how healthcare legislation has and will continue to harm his business. Just another example of career politicians passing legislation that hurts small business owners. Next on our agenda was Amory where we walked downtown and took some time to enjoy the park.
In Tupelo I went to Harrisburg Baptist Church’s Wednesday night supper and prayer meeting service. Anne and I were well received by the members and I enjoyed discussing the Book of James. We then toured through Tupelo.
We finished the night in Fulton. My campaign and I walked through Wal-Mart trying to find anyone who’d listen to my message of restoring God-Centered, limited Constitutional government and returning job creation through freezing the spending, lowering taxes and reducing regulation.
Yesterday, I was approached by a man who said, “Henry, other businesses buy off my best employees after I train them. This turnover and rehiring of employees coupled with government regulation and taxes are creating challenges for my company to remain profitable. What can you do in Washington to help me?” Simple answer, if we reduce taxes on businesses, allow for rapid depreciation of assets and quit penalizing businesses for their profitability, it will allow businesses to expand and prosper rather than decline. The government steals a basic freedom through high taxes and penalties. Businesses deserve to retain their earnings and the government should practice fiscal discipline and freeze the spending. That will make businesses viable, competitive and lead to increased hiring. Something to ponder…
