Commission meeting to discuss proposed coal plant

JACKSON, MISS. — State regulators will meet in a closed door strategy session Wednesday regarding Mississippi Power Company application to build a coal-fired generating plant in Kemper County.

The Mississippi Public Service Commission doesn’t anticipate voting on the issue Wednesday, but will meet the May 1 deadline to make a decision, said Northern District Commissioner Brandon Presley. The board also plans to meet Thursday.

Mississippi Power, a subsidiary of Atlanta-based Southern Co., is seeking to construct a $2.2 billion plant in Kemper County.

The company says the plant would use a new technology that converts a soft coal called lignite into a gas that would fuel turbines to create electricity. Company officials say the lignite would be locally mined and cheaper than natural gas.
