Supreme Court clears way for Byram after decade-long fight

The Byram community has moved closer to becoming a city, after more than a decade of fighting with Jackson over land south of the city.

The Mississippi Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a lower court ruling that Byram can incorporate about 20 square miles and Jackson can annex nearly four square miles to its south.

“We had confidence all along that this would be the decision,” said Byram’s interim mayor, Nick Tremonte. “We are pleased that the Supreme Court ruled in our favor.”

Byram’s attorney Jerry Mills of Ridgeland said the interim mayor and board of aldermen will manage the city until elections can be held, which will require U.S. Department of Justice approval.
