4 media groups get OK to see Balducci-Patterson letters

Four media organizations, including the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal, got the OK today to examine letters written to the U.S. District Court about the last defendants to be sentenced in the judicial bribery scheme known as “Scruggs I.”

Senior Judge Neal Biggers Jr. granted the examination to begin at 10 a.m. Friday at the U.S. District Courthouse in Oxford.

Also getting a look with the Daily Journal are Sandra Knispel of Mississippi Public Broadcasting, Paul Quinn with the Clarion-Ledger and The Daily Mississippi, and Alyssa Schnugg with The Oxford Eagle.

These reporters also have examined letters written to Biggers before sentencing of Richard “Dickie” Scruggs, his son Zach and then-law partner Sidney Backstrom who pleaded guilty for their parts in the conspiracy to bribe Circuit Judge Henry Lackey of Calhoun City.

Those three are serving prison sentences.
