Matter of choice: Dual-sport stars seek chance to shine

It’s great to have the kind of athletic ability that allows you to be a high school star in two sports.
There comes a time, though, when that versatility can create some pretty tough decisions for a young athlete.
That’s where Carencro’s Ricky Johnson and St. Thomas More’s Matt deGraauw find themselves less than a week from National Signing Day.

Johnson played varsity ball in both football and basketball for four years during his career with the Golden Bears.
As a football player, he’s going to make his fifth and final official visit this week to Tennessee after already visiting Mississippi State, Arkansas, Tulsa and Georgia Tech. At 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds with 4.38 speed in the 40-yard dash, Johnson played quarterback and wide receiver in high school, and academically has been a NCAA qualifier for a long time now.

Every interested school is recruiting him as a wide receiver, except for Georgia Tech, which sees Johnson as its next triple-option quarterback.
