Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt keeps his ‘Wild’ side

Last year, Houston Nutt ran the Wild Hog.

This year, it’s the Wild Rebel. In his first year with Mississippi, Nutt’s installed the popular play in which the running back takes direct snaps on offense. Last season at Arkansas, Nutt used Darren McFadden and Felix Jones in the formation; this year it’s another playmaker: 5-foot-8 receiver Dexter McCluster.
In Mississippi’s 41-24 season-opening win over Memphis, McCluster finished with six carries for 64 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown, in the Wild Rebel.
What makes it so difficult to defend, Nutt said, is the change it gives a defense. Nutt called it “a knuckleball.”
