Malzahn should get warm welcome from Auburn football

AUBURN – Gus Malzahn won’t get a ticker-tape parade down North College Street in Auburn today, but he’ll be warmly received as the Tigers’ new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
Auburn announced Sunday that it has hired Malzahn away from Tulsa after two seasons in which the Golden Hurricane has been ranked either first or second in the nation in total offense and scoring. After a week of bad publicity followed by a week of uncertainty over the makeup of the coaching staff, Auburn fans seemed to be one big happy family again Sunday over Gene Chizik’s biggest splash as the Tigers’ head coach.
A Birmingham News Internet poll, which attracted Auburn fans and fans of different schools, found 89 percent of more than 4,300 respondents welcomed the hire in voting through Sunday night. A similar poll at AuburnSports.com, which attracts mostly subscribers interested in Auburn, found 98 percent of the respondents favor the hire.
