Gov. Haley Barbour already has had to trim the budget for the current fiscal year because revenue is not coming in as predicted, and more cuts are possible. Yet some Republican legislators and Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant are talking about possible tax cuts.
True, on the national level President-elect Barack Obama, facing a staggering economic slowdown, is talking about tax cuts to stimulate the economy. If it’s good enough for national politicians, then a tax cut should be good enough for Mississippi.
Right?
There is a distinct difference.
For better or worse, federal officials do not have to make their budget balance. While Mississippi politicians have a little leeway, they ultimately have to keep their budget in the black.
