Hancock County is receiving $1 million to build a new emergency operations center, replacing the one Hurricane Katrina destroyed more than three years ago.
The county earlier received a $500,000 E-911 Commission Grant Award it used to install equipment such as microwave tower improvements, high speed T-1 lines and an equipment shelter.
The EOC serves as the nerve center for rescue operations during disaster situations. It will be located in Bay St. Louis, which is providing the land for the building.
The grant is part of a $200 million U.S. Department of Homeland Security program intended to improve emergency management and preparedness capabilities for major disasters by supporting state and local EOCs.
