Jackson wants $560M

Jackson Mayor Frank Melton has submitted dozens of “ready to go” projects that could be funded by a new stimulus package promoted by Democratic leaders in Congress and President-elect Barack Obama.

About 170 projects for sewer, road and other public works proposals range from improvements to Jackson’s airport to renovations to Murrah and Provine high schools. They would cost more than $560 million and could create thousands of local jobs. The only requirement is that they be completed in one or two years.

Melton submitted the list to the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which released a list Monday of 11,391 projects spread among 427 cities.

“They are things the city desperately needs, but we don’t have the money for them,” said Robert Walker, Jackson’s chief administrative officer.
