Tide Builds a Title Contender Around Mount Cody
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The shotgun wedding of the Alabama football program and nose tackle Terrence Cody was a product of mutual desperation.
Coming off a 7-6 season that included a loss to Louisiana-Monroe, the Crimson Tide badly needed an anchor for the middle of Coach Nick Saban’s 3-4 defense.
And after a junior-college season during which he ballooned to 410 pounds, Cody needed a scholarship offer. Any offer. Despite Cody’s dominance at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, his weight so scared teams that his coach, Steve Campbell, was unsuccessfully cold-calling midmajor programs about him.
