Croom resigns as MSU football coach
In a news release, Croom stated that he resigned. MSU athletic director Greg Byrne also said the coach resigned, but said in a meeting with reporters this afternoon that the school will honor in full the buyout clause in Croom’s contract.
That buyout is believed to be around $3 million. Byrne wouldn’t specify the buyout or terms of when Croom will be paid, other than saying “we’ve come to an agreement that both sides are comfortable with.”
Byrne said he feels “comfortable” that MSU can meet the financial obligations. State will continue to honor the contracts of Croom’s nine assistant coaches, which run through the 2009 season and are worth a collective $1.85 million per year.
Assistant coach Rockey Felker, the Bulldogs’ head coach from 1986-1990, will be the interim coach. He and Byrne both said they’ll place a priority on keeping the team’s recruiting class together.
