Congressman Alan Nunnelee’s statement on House passage of Energy and Water Bill

NUNNELEE STATEMENT ON HOUSE PASSAGE OF ENERGY AND WATER BILL

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The House of Representatives last night passed H.R. 2609, the Fiscal Year 2014 Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies Appropriations Act. The bill cuts $2.9 billion from the FY 2013 level. Congressman Alan Nunnelee (R-Miss), who serves as Vice Chairman of the Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee, released a statement following passage:
“Governing is about making tough choices and being responsible with taxpayer dollars,” Nunnelee said. “Our bill meets these goals by focusing support on national security and infrastructure priorities, while cutting spending on less important items such as the President’s green energy programs.”
Nunnelee also reiterated his support for moving all 12 House appropriations bills, rather than relying on continuing resolutions (CRs) to fund government operations.
“CRs prevent the legislative branch from exercising oversight of the executive,” Nunnelee said. “As we have seen over the last few months, President Obama’s administration is in dire need of increased accountability. In an era of divided government, passing appropriations bills in line with the House Budget is the best, most likely way to get conservative reforms into law.”
Highlights of the bill include:
• Emphasizing critical federal responsibilities: the national defense and the maintenance of our nation’s waterways.
• Providing for modernization of the nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile and its supporting infrastructure, while preventing the President from implementing his plan to reduce the stockpile.
• Essential investment in navigation and flood control activities.
• Strong support for science research and development programs, which are essential to our country’s long-term prosperity.
• Prioritization of funding for programs that advance our all-of-the-above plan for energy security.
• Rolling back the Obama Administration’s politically motivated Yucca Mountain policy that runs contrary to the will of the Congress and the American people.
