UPDATE – Letter postmarked from Memphis tests positive for Ricin and sent to US Sen. Roger Wicker

By: Magnolia Tribune - April 17, 2013

UPDATE – Chicago Tribune now reporting that ricin laced letter postmarked from Memphis also sent to President Obama. Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) also received a suspicious letter at a field office.

Reminiscent of an anthrax scare in the post 9/11 attack, Senator Roger Wicker was sent a letter that has initially tested positive for the poisin Ricin out of the Memphis postal facility.

From the Commercial Appeal:

An envelope sent to Mississippi Sen. Roger Wicker and believed to contain the poison ricin was postmarked from Memphis, the Senate’s sergeant at arms said Tuesday evening.

“The exterior markings on the envelope in this case were not outwardly suspicious, but it was postmarked from Memphis, Tenn., and had no return address,” the message sent to senators’ offices from Sergeant at Arms Terrance W. Gainer said.

The letter was discovered at an off-site processing facility and never reached Wicker’s Dirksen Senate Office Building.

There were four tests on the letter, which had no return address. Two tested positive and two tested negative. Senator Wicker now has increased security.

According to Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), police have a suspect in mind.

Police have a suspect in mind as they investigate a letter mailed to Sen. Roger Wicker that tested positive for poisonous ricin, a Senate colleague said.

“The person that is a suspect writes a lot of letters to members,” Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., said Tuesday as she emerged from a classified briefing.
