Nesbit builder Chris Massey upsets Doug Davis for Mississippi Senate seat

Nesbit homebuilder Chris Massey upset Doug Davis to win election to the 1st District state Senate seat Davis had held since 2005, and Lt. Gov. Phil Bryant avoided a runoff with Pass Christian contractor Dave Dennis in Tuesday’s Republican gubernatorial primary.

The two top vote-getters in the Democratic gubernatorial primary, Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree and Clarksdale lawyer Bill Luckett, appeared headed toward a runoff after William Bond Compton of Meridian and veteran tax assessor Guy Dale Shaw of Coffeeville combined for about 15 percent of the vote.

With 1,313 of the state’s 1,873 precincts reporting, DuPree received 45 percent of the vote compared to Luckett’s 38 percent.

A candidate must collect more than 50 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff.
