MS Press: Childers on Top in Fundraising

Childers’ war chest exceeds $700K while Republicans
gear up for expensive three-way primary

Booneville, MS — Local and state news headlines this weekend declared Congressman Travis Childers (MS-01) the leader in fundraising in both the first quarter and the cycle so far for Mississippi’s First Congressional District race. Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reported, “If money were votes, incumbent U.S. Rep. Travis Childers, D-Booneville, would be the hands-down favorite so far in the race for Mississippi’s 1st Congressional District seat” [“Childers leads pack in fundraising,” 4/17/2010].

Childers brought in $220,000 this quarter and more than $1 million this cycle. His total cash on hand now exceeds $700,000, more than twice the amount of his leading potential challenger. In response to this quarter’s fundraising numbers, Chris Cillizza of The Fix, the Washington Post’s political analysis blog, pointed to Childers’ increased strength due in part to the “disappointing fundraising of state Sen. Alan Nunnelee” [The Fix, 4/16/2010].

Here are some of the state and local stories on Childers’ fundraising lead:
