Texas Longhorns seniors pursue title ring tonight that’s truly theirs
PASADENA, Calif. — Texas quarterback Colt McCoy, like other fifth-year seniors in the Longhorns’ lineup, owns a national championship ring from the 2005 season. But he is reluctant to flash it, even in private settings.
“I never wear it,” McCoy said. “Because I didn’t win it.”
As a redshirt freshman who charted plays during the 2006 Rose Bowl, McCoy was merely a spectator the night the Longhorns won their most recent national title. He will need to be far more than that in tonight’s BCS National Championship Game if No. 2 Texas (13-0) is to secure the school’s fifth national title against No. 1 Alabama (13-0) at the Rose Bowl.
If Texas wins, McCoy vows to wear a 2009 championship ring because it is something he would have earned.
“If things go our way, that would be a sweet ending,” said McCoy, winner of the 2009 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. “I want to be in that position.”
So do five other projected starters in tonight’s game (7 p.m., WFAA/Ch. 8) who were sideline spectators when quarterback Vince Young led Texas past top-ranked Southern California 41-38 to seal the 2005 national title. Like McCoy, most of them have minimal attachment to the 2005 rings they keep in safe-deposit boxes or in the hands of their parents.
