Barbour trims budget more
Has cut more than $220M to balance ledgers
Gov. Haley Barbour made another round of painful cuts in state spending on Thursday, this time trimming $54.3 million from the state’s $6billion budget for the 2010 fiscal year, on top of the $170 million in cuts he made in September.
Barbour is required by law to balance the state budget by the time the fiscal year ends June 30.
“The bad thing about these cuts is that most of these departments have already been cut 5, 6, 7 percent,” Barbour said during a news conference.
The latest round of cuts brings the state’s spending reductions to $224 million for the fiscal year, and about $160 million more likely will be needed to balance by budget by June 30.
