Childers holds at least 50 meetings leading to no vote on healthcare

Childers holds 50 meetings leading to no vote on healthcare

Since the beginning of 2009, Congressman Travis Childers (MS-01) has held more than 50 meetings and events about health care reform with constituents, organizations, and businesses in order to give the people he represents an opportunity to share their ideas and concerns about the pending legislation. These meetings and events are in addition to the more than 100 meetings between representatives of such groups and Congressman Childers’ legislative staff, as well as thousands of personal interactions between the Congressman and his constituents.

As of today, Congressman Childers also logged a significant number of hours reading and analyzing the House’s health care reform legislation since the bill’s text was made available last Thursday, October 29.

A list of the more than 50 meetings and events appears below:

October 21: Blue Dog Meeting on Health Care

Childers participated in a Blue Dog meeting in Washington, DC featuring a discussion on risk analysts’ proposal to shift the basis of U.S. health care from fee-for-service to a value-based system.

October 15: Meeting with Commission on Mental Health and Development Disabilities Commission

Childers met with representatives from the Tennessee Commission on Mental Health and Development Disabilities Commission in his Washington, DC office to discuss the need for mental health services in DeSoto County.

October 7: Meeting with Pfizer, Inc.

Childers met with representatives from Pfizer in his Washington, DC office to discuss the company’s ability to research new and more effective pharmaceutical drugs, as well as patent regulations.

September 30: Meeting with the National Senior Citizens League

Childers met with members of the National Senior Citizens League in his Washington, DC office to discuss Medicare and other issues important to seniors.
September 24: Meeting with American Medical Directors Association

Childers met with the Director of Pharmacy Services from the American Medical Directors Association in his Washington, DC office to discuss long-term care pharmacies and controls on prescription drugs.

September 23: Blue Dog Meeting on Health Care

Childers participated in a Blue Dog meeting in Washington, DC to discuss systemic risk within insurance markets.

September 22: Meeting with Mississippi Cancer Action Network

Childers met with representatives of the Mississippi Cancer Action Network in his Washington, DC office, including a member and cancer survivor from Water Valley to discuss important provisions in health care reform regarding cancer treatment and insurance coverage for cancer patients.

September 10: Blue Dog Meeting on Health Care

Childers participated in a Blue Dog meeting on health care in Washington, DC to discuss updates to health care reform proposals.

September 4: Meeting with Mississippi Association of Family Physicians

Childers met with the Mississippi Association of Family Physicians in Tupelo, MS to discuss health care reform and issues related to primary care providers.
September 2: Tour of Magnolia Hospital

Childers toured Magnolia Hospital in Corinth, MS, and met with hospital administrators and doctors to address questions and concerns regarding with potential health care reform.

September 1: Tour of Grenada Lake Health Center

Childers toured Grenada Lake Health Center, and met with hospital administrators and doctors to address questions and concerns regarding potential health care reform.
August 20: Tour and Meeting with Okolona Community Pharmacy

Childers toured Okolona Community Pharmacy and met with pharmacists to discuss how potential health care reform could impact community pharmacies.

August 19: Coffee with Your Congressman on Health Care

Childers held a Coffee with Your Congressman in Ripley, MS to discuss potential health care reform with residents of Tippah County.

August 18: Health Care Tele-Town Hall

Childers held a Health Care Tele-Town Hall to answer constituents’ questions and listen to their concerns surrounding potential health care reform legislation. More than 7,200 constituents participated in the call.
May 6: Meeting with Tupelo Cardiology Associates

Childers met with Tupelo Cardiology Associates to discuss the potential implications of the health care reform bill for cardiologists.

August 4: Meeting with Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

Childers met with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation in Tupelo, MS to recognize the members of the organization and discuss further funding needs for juvenile diabetes research.

July 9: Blue Dog Health Care Task Force Meeting

Childers participated in a Blue Dog Health Care Task Force meeting in Washington, DC during which former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle presented his views on how to solve the health care crisis. The Task Force, of which Childers is a member, was formed in March to lead Blue Dog efforts to ensure Congress advances health care reform legislation that not only addresses the millions of Americans lacking access and affordability of coverage, but also puts the country back on a fiscally sustainable path.
June 30: Meeting at University of Mississippi Medical Center

Childers toured the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS, and met with hospital administrators and doctors to discuss the hospital’s expansion, as well as issues related to potential health care reform.
June 29: Meeting at Tupelo VA Medical Clinic

Childers visited and toured the Tupelo VA Medical Clinic to discuss federal funding for the facility, as well as veterans’ benefits.

June 25: Blue Dog Health Care Task Force Meeting

Childers participated in a Blue Dog Health Care Task Force meeting in Washington, DC to discuss Member objectives and concerns regarding potential health care reform.
June 16: Blue Dog Health Care Task Force Meeting

Childers participated in a Blue Dog Health Care Task Force meeting in Washington, DC to discuss innovations in delivery reform.

June 10: Blue Dog Meeting on Health Care

Childers participated in a Blue Dog meeting on Health Care in Washington, DC. Healthways, the largest and most experienced health, wellness and chronic care management company in the world, presented their comments on the health reform debate.
June 9: Blue Dog Health Care Task Force Meeting

Childers participated in a Blue Dog Health Care Task Force meeting in Washington, DC focusing on “Improving Quality in Healthcare.” The meeting was attended by a distinguished panel of stakeholders including representatives from Advocacy and Public Policy of the American Hospital Association, the Federation of American Hospitals, the National Rural Health Care Association, the Healthcare Leadership Council, and Premier, Inc.

Childers participated in a Blue Dog Health Care Task Force meeting in Washington, DC to discuss Member objectives and concerns regarding potential health care reform.

May 29: Meeting at Baptist Memorial Hospital

Childers met with Baptist Memorial Hospital administrators and doctors in Booneville, MS to listen to address questions and concerns regarding potential health care reform.
May 29: Roundtable Meeting with Senior Citizens and AARP

Childers held a roundtable with senior citizens and the Mississippi AARP in Tupelo, MS to understand the specific concerns of seniors regarding Medicare and their hopes for changes in the health care system.

May 28: Meeting with Baptist Memorial Hospital

Childers toured Baptist Memorial Hospital in Southaven, MS, and met with hospital administrators and doctors to answer questions and discuss concerns regarding potential health care reform.

May 27: Meeting with Representatives from Mississippi Medical Center and Clinics

Childers met with representatives from Mississippi Medical Center and Clinics in Tupelo, MS, and met with doctors to address questions and concerns regarding potential health care reform.

May 26: Meeting with Doctors at Baptist Memorial Hospital

Childers met with doctors at Baptist Memorial Hospital of Golden Triangle in Columbus, MS to address questions concerns regarding potential health care reform.

Childers met with 3M Healthcare in his Washington, DC office to discuss the possible effects of health care reform on their business, which has a facility in Mississippi.
May 12: Meeting with Mississippi Dental Association

Childers met with the Mississippi Dental Association in his Washington, DC office to discuss dental coverage within health care reform.

May 6: Meeting with the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the American Society of Anesthesiology

Childers met with the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the American Society of Anesthesiology in his Washington, DC office to discuss issues surrounding Medicare reimbursement rates.

Childers met with the Mississippi Orthopedic Society in his Washington, DC office to discuss the specific concerns of orthopedic specialists and surgeons surrounding potential health care reform legislation.

April 28: Blue Dog Health Care Task Force Meeting

Childers participated in a Blue Dog Health Care Task Force meeting in Washington, DC to focus on the role of primary care in health care reform, specifically in delivery and access challenges. Attending panelists included representatives from the American College of Physicians (ACP), the National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA), the American Osteopathic Association, the American Nurses Association (ANA), the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS), the Board of the American Medical Association (AMA), and the American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA).

February 19: Meeting with Baptist Memorial Hospital Executives

Childers met with Baptist Memorial Hospital executives in Memphis, TN to discuss the challenges facing hospitals during today’s tough economic climate.
January 31: Speaking Engagement at HealthWorks!

Childers spoke at the grand opening of HealthWorks! in Tupelo, MS to congratulate the community for supporting an innovative health education facility and to talk about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle beginning at an early age.

January 28: Meeting with Air Medical Coalition

Childers met with Air Medical Coalition in his Washington, DC office to discuss the funding needs of medical air services.
