Saban has guarded praise for his team after closed workout

Maybe the questions are getting answered.

Fifth-ranked Alabama went through its first preseason scrimmage on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium, and Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban seemed uncharacteristically pleased with his team’s performance in the two-hour workout that was closed to the media and fans.

Saban, who generally doesn’t offer a lot of praise following the first scrimmage — thereby giving his team plenty of room for improvement — said the defense did a better job getting off the field on third down, the offense moved the ball effectively and first-team quarterback Greg McElroy was solid in his workout against the first-team defensive unit.

And while he admitted there were no standouts in the rushing attack, the third-year coach pointed out that his rushers were effective, even if the quintet of Roy Upchurch, Terry Grant, Mark Ingram, Pensacola’s Trent Richardson and Eddie Lacy managed just 129 yards.
