College football weekend rewind: USC, Georgia and Florida are toast
Sunday, September 28, 2008
OK, now I’m totally confused. Well, not totally. A few decent representatives from the SEC West remain alive and the Big 12 is living up to its commitment.
Although it’s never wise to bury a one-loss team this time of the year – just as it’s never wise to say a team like Southern California should start making plans for Miami in January, as you may have read in this space a week ago – I am officially throwing dirt on three teams who just three days ago all were in the Top 5: Southern California, Georgia and Florida.
The Trojans’ problem is their conference. Yes, I will say it again: Nobody (outside of Oregon State) will beat USC in the Pac-10. But the Trojans will not be the most worthy one-loss team standing, if, in fact, a one-loss team is playing for the title.
As for Florida and Georgia: They are in the best conference to lose one game and deserve a shot. The problem is they both have at least one more loss on the schedule.
